Flowers, like people, have their own unique characteristics and feel. Color, texture, shape, and size all contribute to the overall mood of each stem. With this in mind, each botanical beauty project is catered to the theme and story we are telling through the wearable flower pieces I create. For the “red flame” concept the theme was glamourous with a touch of old Hollywood, which gave me an idea of what I wanted to create. However, one also has to keep in mind who will be wearing the design and what color and style suits them best. From beginning to end, each project is carefully thought out to create the best possible desired result.

The “red flame” project was in the works for a few weeks prior to bringing it all together. It all started with a concept and what story we were trying to tell. Next, we selected a model for the photoshoot, and I began to plan the design. I wanted to create a hat made fully of wearable flowers for the model to wear. The reason for this was to give her an old Hollywood vintage appeal. Red flowers were selected with a touch of green buds to add texture and contrast. A black mesh was added to the hat to really distinguish the look I was going for. Next, I created a flower earring using the same flower style and color I had used for the hat. My goal was to balance the design since the hat was going to be mainly covering one side of the face, so the earring would be added to the opposite side. This was followed by a flower ring accessory to really bring it all together. When creating full body designs it’s important to remember that in order for the look to feel fully finished, accessories are very important to think about.

Yet perhaps the true showstopper is always the main piece, in this case it was the dress. The skirt was made by designer Inna Rudenko who went for a slit skirt piece that truly allured to the “fire” and sensual mood we wanted. My part was designing a top made only of wearable flowers that would come together with the skirt to create a dress. Each flower was applied one by one to our model’s body in a process that can take around five hours to complete. I styled a low-cut top for both the front and back of the dress, outlining the natural curves of the model and keeping the sensual theme. The goal was to use flowers that would look fiery yet soft, allowing for a sexy yet classy look. When posed with the right background and props added by photographer Yuliya Panchenko, the project came together to show that the art of wearable flowers is a fashion statement that is unique in every way possible. And that art is ever changing to give us all a chance to bloom.
